Reaching Out to MHFA Staff Representatives

You are welcome to reach out to any MHFA Staff representative across IMU University if you feel comfortable.

However, it may sometimes be easier to talk to someone familiar from your own academic community.

Find Your School/Department Representative:

Staff members are trained to recognise signs of mental health challenges such as stress, anxiety, or depression, and can provide initial support. You can turn to a familiar face for help. Respecting everyone’s time and privacy, the best way to make initial contact is by sending an email or Microsoft Teams message to introduce yourself and arrange a convenient time to chat.

For professional support:

For ongoing counselling, contact the central Student Counselling Services (SCS) team directly. An MHFA staff representative can assist in facilitating this connection.

MHFA Staff Representatives: Myths and Facts

Myth 1: “Talking to an MHFA Staff Representative is the same as getting counselling.”

Fact: MHFA Staff Representatives are not trained counsellors. They serve as a first point of contact, offering initial support and guiding you to professional services at Student Counselling Services (SCS) when needed.

Myth 2: “MHFA Staff Representatives can diagnose me with anxiety, depression, or other conditions.”

Fact: MHFA Staff Representatives are not qualified to diagnose mental health conditions. The role is to recognise when someone may be struggling and to encourage seeking professional help.

Myth 3: "Everything I say will be 100% confidential, just like in therapy."

Your privacy is treated with the highest priority. However, as university staff, MHFA Representatives have a responsibility to escalate serious concerns if there is a risk of harm to you or others, in line with standard safeguarding protocols.

Myth 4: "Reaching out will go on my official student record."

Fact: MHFA Staff Representatives are volunteer staff and do not keep clinical records. Concerns are not reported to your faculty or HR unless there is a critical safety issue. The role is to provide informal support as part of the IMU community.
