Navigating campus is easy, with various transportation options to meet your needs. Whether you choose to drive or rely on public transportation, getting around the university is simple and efficient. With these options available, you’ll find that traveling around campus is convenient, no matter how you prefer to commute.
Getting Around
Transportation
Transportation plays a crucial role in the daily lives of students. Public transport, such as buses and trains, is a common and affordable option for many students. It offers scheduled services and fixed routes, making it a reliable way to commute, especially in cities.
In addition to public transport, e-hailing services have become increasingly popular. These services provide flexibility and convenience, allowing students to request rides on-demand. E-hailing can be especially useful when students need transportation outside public transport operating hours or for routes not covered by traditional services.
Both public transport and e-hailing provide essential mobility solutions for students, catering to different needs based on time, location, and budget.
Public Transport
Public transportation is widely available in Malaysia. You will find it very easy and affordable to get around.
Hail & Ride
For added convenience, you may book e-hailing services through various online applications. These platforms offer both taxis and private cars, with the latter having a maximum seating capacity of four passengers. E-hailing services are widely available and commonly used in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
Simply download the e-hailing apps onto your smartphone and register for an account. Payment options vary depending on the app, allowing you to choose from cash, e-wallets, or online banking facilities.
Here are few famous e-hailing applications for your reference:
Grab
Grab driver partners go through a rigorous 25-point background verification, driver training and vehicle inspection. Safety guaranteed, and widely covered, Grab is most Malaysians’ preferred choice.
AirAsia Ride
AirAsia provides clients with reasonable pricing while providing drivers a smaller fee. Every journey is guaranteed to be extremely pleasant and enjoyable. To ensure the comfort of both the driver and the passenger, they also provide a ladies-only ride.
Maxim
Maxim allows you to enter several addresses to go to on a single ride. Everything is saved in your account history, and you can quickly utilise the previously added addresses next time you use Maxim to book a ride.
InDrive
Real-time (RTD), a unique feature in InDrive, allows customers to book a ride by suggesting what they consider a reasonable charge for the travel, they wish to take. The networks neighbouring drivers will then decide whether to accept the proposed rate, or if not, they may ignore it or negotiate a lesser price with the customer.
Buddy Driver
Powered by SOCAR, Buddy Driver’s certified drivers are trained to follow safety SOP, and the service is available 24/7, day and night. It is a little pricey, with hourly rates beginning at RM50.
Kumpool
Kumpool does not allow users to choose the exact pickup or drop-off sites, unlike the normal car-based e-hailing services. You must choose from the pre-selected stops that are indicated on the map since it operates like a minibus services.
In addition to the e-hailing services mentioned, traditional taxi services are also available. Taxi fares are typically determined by a meter that tracks the distance. However, if a taxi does not have a meter, it is essential to agree on a price with the driver before your trip to avoid any misunderstandings. For trips between midnight and 6:00am., taxis generally impose a surcharge, which can be up to 50% of the fare. Always confirm the amount of this surcharge when booking or before boarding.
It’s a good idea to ask locals or the Student Services Department about reasonable taxi fares to your intended destination. They can provide helpful insights and ensure you’re not overcharged during your trip.
Car Park and Shuttle Services
Car Park and Shuttle Services are important for students who commute to campus. Many universities and colleges offer designated parking areas for students with vehicles. These car parks provide a safe and convenient place for students to leave their cars while attending classes. However, parking spaces may be limited, so students often need to arrive early to find a spot.
Shuttle buses run on set routes, transporting students from parking lots or nearby neighbourhoods to different parts of the campus. This service helps and makes commuting more convenient.
Bukit Jalil
We have observed vehicles parking along the road shoulders on the main road opposite our Campus and near Vista Komanwel C. This poses a potential safety risk to other road users. IMU provides 2 car park areas, namely The SB (Sub-Basement) Car Park and The Hilltop Car Park.
The SB (Sub-Basement) Car Park
The car park which has 120 bays, is exclusively for IMU staff and students. Entry will only be granted upon showing your authorised Staff/Student ID to the entrance guard. A flat rate of RM5 per entry will be charged, and payment must be made using a Touch n GO card only.
The Hilltop Car Park
The car park is equipped with street lighting, CCTV, and a dedicated sheltered metal staircase, located right next to the new hospital compound, ensuring safe and convenient access.
It is open from 7:00am to 7:00pm, Monday to Friday. It remains closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. For those who work or study late, please be reminded to move your vehicle to the sub-basement Car Park after 6:00pm as the Hilltop Car Park will be closed at 7:00pm.
