Having insurance coverage is essential for protecting students financially in the event of a medical emergency. The basic insurance plan covers medical expenses related to illness, injury, or accidents. IMU University offers various types of insurance for all students, including health insurance and medical malpractice insurance, depending on the clinical exposure required by their programmes. Understanding your insurance coverage is crucial for maintaining your well-being and being prepared for any medical needs.
Insurance
Local Student Insurance
IMU University local students are insured against personal accidents, hospitalization and surgical procedures. Students who have clinical exposure are covered additionally for personal liability/medical malpractice insurance. No payment is required for the insurance premium as the university purchases it for all enrolled students. A comprehensive briefing will be provided by our insurer, MSIG Insurance (Malaysia) Bhd and IMU Student Services Hub (SSH) during the orientation week of Semester 1 as part of the orientation to make students aware of the insurance coverage.
Personal Accident Policy
This policy is 24-hour worldwide coverage plan that compensates for:
- Outpatient Medical Expenses RM2,000.00 due to accident only
- Permanent Disability RM50,000.00
- Death caused by accidental of RM50,000.00
Hospital & Surgical Policy
This policy is 24-hour worldwide coverage plan that compensates for:
- Hospital Benefits – room, intensive care, daily allowance (government hospital), ancillary and operating theatre fees
- Professional Fees & Services – pre-admission, surgical fees, anesthetic, ambulance etc.
- Outpatient/Extended Benefits - treatments
Claim Submission
The insurance claim is reimbursable. Students are required to pay first and submit all the required documents for the reimbursement process. The claim will be processed on a case-to-case basis after discussion with (MSIG).
The following are basic guidelines when making a claim:
- If any accident or illness should befall you, please inform the Student Services Hub (SSH) as soon as possible. This is important as IMU must inform MSIG within two weeks from the date of the accident/illness for the claim to be valid. The claim forms are available at the SSH.
- Fill in the correct Claim Form:
- In event of accident, g. fractured limbs, wound from sports injuries, car accidents, or any type of accident, the person making the claim is required to fill in the Personal Accident Claim form.
- In event of hospitalisation, e.g. illness due to viral fever, liver failure, or any other type of illness, the person making the claim is required to fill in the Hospitalisation and Surgical form. To be able to make a claim under this policy, you must have stayed at the hospital for a minimum of 1 night.
- Documents required for submission of a claim:
- Insurance Claim Form: This is a standard form provided by the insurance company that needs to be filled out with relevant details about the claim.
- Original Receipts from Clinic/Hospital: These receipts serve as proof of payment for medical services or treatment received. They should clearly indicate the services provided, dates, and amounts paid.
- Medical Report/Doctor’s Diagnosis: A medical report or doctor’s diagnosis detailing the nature of the illness or injury, and the recommended treatment is usually required to support the claim.
- Copy of Bank Statement for Bank Account Verification: This is necessary for bank account verification purposes to ensure that reimbursements are deposited into the correct account.
Submitting these documents helps facilitate the processing of the insurance claim and ensures that all necessary information is provided to the insurance provider.
- Claims would normally be refunded within 2 to 3 months.

International Student Insurance
IMU University international students are insured against outpatient GP visits and hospital admission. Students who have clinical exposure are covered additionally for personal liability/medical malpractice insurance. The insurance premium payment is paid together as part of the student visa fees for all enrolled students. A comprehensive briefing will be provided by our insurer, Tokio Marine Insurance (Malaysia) and IMU Student Services Hub (SSH) during the orientation week of Semester 1 as part of the orientation to make students aware of the insurance coverage.
Outpatient GP Panel Clinic
Students who have underlying health conditions or are caring for someone with underlying health condition, the students are to seek opinion from GP (general practitioner) in any nearby panel clinic immediately. New students will receive a welcoming e-mail from Tokio Marine 4 weeks after their enrollment date on details pertaining to their insurance app registration and log-in.
Hospital Admission
Students who are required to get admitted can always walk to any nearby panel hospitals (ER).
The nearest hospital to IMU is Columbia Asia Bukit Jalil.
International Assistance (IA) Applications
- Students will receive an email from Tokio Marine with regards to login details to their email.
- Students are required to download the International Assistance (IA) application for panel list and its features.
- Upon receiving the email, you are required to download IA application (APP) and register with given login details.

Hospital Admission Procedure and Payment
- Students needing to be admitted to hospital are to request a Guaranteed Letter (GL) via the IA app.
- If asked by the hospital, your insurance provider is Tokio Marine. Your third-party administrator is International Assistance (IA).
- Upon admission, the hospital will require you to make a deposit payment and the amount to pay varies from hospital to hospital.
- Upon discharge, the hospital will liaise with your insurance company for the payment. If the amount utilized during your hospitalization is within the coverage amount, you will not have to pay the bill. But if the amount exceeded the coverage amount, you would have to pay the remaining exceeded amount to the hospital. Hence, your deposit paid during your admission will be deducted for the exceeded charges. The hospital should refund the remaining amount of your deposit to you if it’s not fully deducted.
Request Guarantee Letter (GL) Screen via App
This is the Request GL Screen where students will be able to select from the panel providers and specialist doctors in the hospital along with the intended date of visit.
Scenario 1: Student request GL via portal and upload complete documents (attach completed admission form) for GL issuance. IGL will be issued within 1 hour and email notification “done” will be sent to student.
Scenario 2: Student request GL via portal, but documents uploaded were not complete. IA will contact the student to get complete details within 1 hours’ time and coordinate with the hospital to get admission form completed by the treating doctor. Once the completed form is received, IGL will be issued within 1 hour and email notification “done” will be sent to the student.

Medical Malpractice Insurance
Healthcare professionals who provide medical services owe a duty of care to their patients and must exercise due care and skill. If the patient suffers any bodily injury, sickness, disease, death due to the negligence of the healthcare professional, then the patient has the right to sue for the loss.
Medical Malpractice Insurance – Malaysian Hospitals
All local and international students are covered by medical malpractice insurance. This additional insurance covers students who are in programmes that have clinical exposure. No payment is required for the insurance premium as the university purchases it for all enrolled students who are needing clinical exposure in a Malaysian hospital / facility.

Medical Malpractice Insurance – Overseas Hospitals
All local and international students who are needing the medical malpractice insurance coverage for their elective postings / attachments / mobility programme application to an overseas hospital / facility will need to purchase this additional insurance on their own. The premium charges will be quoted by the insurance company depending on the duration and country of elective.
To obtain a quotation from the insurance provider, please follow these steps:
Compose an Email

Wait for Response
Once your request is received, the Student Services Help Desk will forward the request to the insurance provider. Insurance provider will revert the quotation for the premium charges and payment instructions.
Revert your decision
You are to revert your decision to purchase this insurance from the insurance company with the attached payment slip as proof of premium payment. Upon receipt of payment, the insurance company will insure you under this policy. A copy of your insurance certificate will be provided to you once it’s ready.

Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is coverage designed to protect against risks and financial losses that could happen while traveling. The risks range from minor inconveniences such as missed airline connections and delayed luggage all the way to more serious issues including injuries or major illness.
